Nature of request
Arnold de Mente, citizen of Bayonne, states that Arnold de Seint Martin and his companions, some of whom are not from Bayonne, although they have claimed to be, told the King that they had been robbed in Spain of goods amounting to 5000 marks, at the command of the King of Spain; but he says that restitution has been made to them of a larger sum than they lost, as the King will find from the bailiffs of Sandwich at that time, or from good and loyal merchants of Bayonne, and that they procured an inquisition of Englishmen to establish their losses - as a result of which the goods of William de Saut were seized. He asks that the correct sum might be inquired into by good and loyal merchants of Bayonne who were present when they lost their goods, and that good security might be taken from them to answer for the remainder.
