Name(s)
de Saut, Bernard
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Bernard de Saut, son of William de Saut, citizen of Bayonne, states that during the war between the King and the King of France, his father and his companions, Andrew de Beraute and Pelegrin de Venele, seized a Spanish ship, which was delivered with the goods it contained, to the King's ministers and bailiffs of Portsmouth, and, at the King's command, they received the value of these goods. Then, because of a false insinuation about this matter, William de Saut's goods were seized until he had made restitution of a sum of money greater than the value of the entire contents of the ship. Bernard requests an inquiry by the same bailiffs and ministers who delivered the goods to the three men into how much they were worth, and that when the truth has been established that William's goods might no longer be seized or distrained to answer for what he should not. He adds that the King might know the truth from the Earl of Lincoln, Amanieu de Lebret, John de Seint Johan and other great lords who were in Gascony, and requests delivery of the goods.
Nature of endorsement
