Description
Petitioners
Community of St Emilion.
Nature of request
The community of St Emilion states that they used to be a community with a Mayor until just before the Gascon war, when Peter de Scarlet, their Mayor, died, and the office was taken into the King's hand. Shortly afterwards the town was taken by the French, and has been without a Mayor ever since. It has now surrendered into the hand of the King of England, but the Seneschal of Gascony refuses to allow them to have a Mayor. They ask that if they have done anything to displease the King they might be allowed to put it right, and that they might have their Mayor back.
Nature of endorsement
The Seneschal of Gascony is to be ordered to inform himself of the reason why the office of Mayor was taken into the King's hand, and of the advantage or disadvantage that might come to the King from granting the office; and he is to inform the King.
