SC 8/141/7022
Date
[1421]
Description
Petitioners
Humphrey Stafford, knight.
Name(s)
Stafford, Humphrey
Addressees
Lords of parliament.
Nature of request
Humphrey Stafford, knight, states that after the King's crossing to Normandy he was forcibly disseised of his manor of Chelmarsh in Shropshire by Richard Wygemore, Thomas Whitegreve, John Heryng and others, at the command of Edmund, Earl of March and of Walter Lucy, knight, for the Earl's benefit; and that they still hold it. He asks the lords to ask the King to restore him to his manor, with the issues taken from it in the meantime: especially considering that the Earl is going overseas, and then he will not be able to have a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Chelmarsh, Shropshire
Normandy, [France].
People mentioned
[Henry V, King of England]
Richard Wygemore
Thomas Whitegreve

Edmund [de Mortimer], Earl of March
Walter Lucy, knight.
Note
CPR 1416-22 p.436 is dated 1 July 1422, and seems to be a result of this petition, as it states that the King lately ordered the Countess of March to explain why Humphrey Stafford should not be restored to the manor - which she has not done. CPR 1416-22 p.421, dated 5 February 1422, would also seem to be related, although the names of those who expelled him from the manor are quite different. These references, together with the mention of the presence of the King in parliament, and of recent and imminent voyages overseas, would seem to suggest that this petition was presented to the parliament of May 1421.
