Description
Petitioners
John le Strange, Lord le Strange.
Name(s)
le Strange, Lord le Strange, John
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
John, Lord le Strange, states that a dispute had arisen between him and Roger Kynaston, who had married Elizabeth, his mother, over lordships, lands and other possessions which Elizabeth had had in jointure, and which Roger had kept after her death. After Roger had refused to abide by several arbitrations, the matter was put to the arbitration of Lords Rivers and Dudley, who decided that Roger should have lordships, lands and tenements to an annual value of £100 for term of life. But Roger not only refused to obey this, but made armed attacks on the petitioner's lordships and lands, carrying off his goods and chattels, assaulting the petitioner, his tenants and servants, killing and wounding, imprisoning, and putting to fines and redemptions, and greatly destroying his lands and the country: as is specified in bills attached to this petition. John complained, but Roger has refused to obey any summons to appear before the King to answer for this, and has now fled to Powys, where he is living as an outlaw. John requests letters of the privy seal to the Earl of Shrewsbury and Lord Herbert, who had a commission to arrest Roger Kynaston, to do their duty more diligently, and writs of proclamation to the Justices of the Peace, the Sheriffs of Shropshire, Flintshire, Herefordshire, and Cheshire, and to the Mayors, bailiffs and other officers in these counties to assist the commissioners in capturing Roger and his adherents, and in bringing them before the King; and that no-one should presume to aid him. And he asks that Roger might be committed to ward until he has answered to the petitioner.
