SC 8/141/7007
Date
[1292-1307]
Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of Our Lady of Southwark.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The Prior and convent of Our Lady of Southwark state that by a fine levied in the court of Henry III, they were seised of 20s. of annual rent from the manor of Westerham, but that after the manor came into the hands of the Abbot of Westminster he refused to pay it. The Prior petitioned parliament on this, and was told to distrain the Abbot: but the Abbot has refused his distraints. He petitioned again, and was told to purchase a writ of novel disseisin. He has done so, but the assize has been delayed because the Abbot has produced the King's charter, claiming that he cannot be judged there. The Prior requests a remedy, so that he is not disinherited.
Nature of endorsement
He is to have a writ of Chancery to the justices to proceed to hold the assize if they can. And if there are difficulties that prevent them etc. they are to send the record and process before the King. And the parties are to be adjourned there.

Westminster.
People mentioned
Henry [III], King of England
Stephen, Prior of Southwark

Eleanor [of Castile], Queen of England
the Abbot of Westminster.
Note
The manor of Westerham was given to the Abbot of Westminster on 25 October 1292 (CChR 1257-1300, p.425), so the petition must date from between then and 1307. As there have been two previous petitions on this matter, it probably dates from a few years after 1292.
