Walter Southerne, mariner of Ireland.
Name(s)
Southerne, Walter

Nature of request
Walter Southerne, mariner of Ireland, states that he was captured at sea by Thomas Don, mariner of Scotland, and held by the Scots until Andrew de Hartcla and Robert de Leybourn took the Isle of Man, when he surrendered to the King's peace. However, Walter le Striveyn of Pontefract, not knowing this, maliciously suggested to the Mayor and Sheriffs of London that he was the King's enemy, and he was arrested and thrown into Newgate prison, where he has been for seven years. He asks that he might be released.
Nature of endorsement
Coram domino rege. The Sheriffs of London are to be ordered to inform the King about the manner and cause of the arrest, that the King might further do etc.

Walter le Striveyn of Pontefract.
Note
Dated on the guard to '? Ed. II, before 1322' (perhaps with reference to Andrew de Harcla, although there is no reason to suppose from this that he is still alive), and dated by 'Irish Ancient Petitions' to 'c. 1307-1322', presumably on the same grounds. The reference to the English capture of the Isle of Man seven years previously (i.e. 1317) suggests the petition can be dated more positively to the mid-1320s.
