Reference
SC 8/131/6535
Date
[c. 1322]
Description
Petitioners
John de Norton.
Name(s)
de Norton, John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Norton requests a writ to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer ordering them to search for the cognizance made by him to the king, and that he be brought before them and that they hear his reasons and allegations giving to him full rights of law. If it is found that the money that Tyeys gave to him for the use of his mother, and which the king believed to be forfeit by Tyeys' forfeiture, is not forfeit then he requests that he be delivered without delay out of the Fleet where he has been sent by writ of Chancery, and that in the meantime he be released by sufficient mainprise.
Nature of endorsement
Let the treasure and barons of the exchequer be ordered to view the congizance.
Places mentioned
Fleet Prison, [London].
People mentioned
Henry le Tyeys
Hawise [Tyeys], mother of Henry le Tyeys.
Note
The petition seems to date to 1322 or shortly thereafter as Tyeys forfeited as a consequence of the fall of Lancaster. It is also likely to date quite closely to SC 8/7/324, which is itself dated as 'One of a collection of petitions published on pages 387ff of Rot. Parl., vol I., which all seem to date from around 1322. This dating is confirmed by PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337, Rotuli Parliamentorum I, pp. 387-415, which dates these petitions to 15 or 16 Edward II (1321-1323)'.
