Reference
SC 8/131/6529
Date
[1322]
Description
Petitioners
William le Norreis (Norris).
Name(s)
Norreis (Norris), William
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Noreis requests that he be served of the annuity and other maintenance which he has by agreement with Wilenton from Uplowman, or the return of the land which he gave to Wilenton for the annuity and maintenance, as he and his wife and children have nothing to live on. As part of the agreement if the annuity and maintenance was in arrears Wilenton agreed that it could be taken by distress from his manor of Uplowman.
Nature of endorsement
He should show his writing in Chancery and when the truth of it has been enquired of and the inquisition returned into Chancery, let justice be done to him.
Places mentioned
Norreisegh (Noreyshegh in Uplowman), Devon
Uplowman, [Devon].
People mentioned
Henry de Wilenton
[Hugh de Audley], Earl of Gloucester.
Note
The petition can be firmly dated to 1322 as it would seem that Norreis' annuity and maintenance were being withheld because of Wilenton's forfeiture. The inquisition made in accordance with the response to this petition dates to July 1322, and the keeper of Wilenton's lands was ordered to restore the annuity and maintenance on 25 July 1322 (CIM 1307-49, no.517; CCR 1318-23, pp.583-4).
