Description
Petitioners
People of Salisbury.
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The people of Salisbury request that the king order that all people with lands or tenements in the city should contribute to the cost of building defences to protect the city and its cathedral from the French.
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the lords of parliament that the demand is reasonable, and a warrant should be issued to the mayor and bailiffs of the city to compel the rebels, if necessary; saving always those privileged.
Places mentioned
Salisbury, [Wiltshire]
France.
Note
The resultant writ granting the request was issued on 5 February 1378, along with a similar grant to the city of Winchester. Evidently the petition was presented to the previous parliament, this being that of October 1377.
