Date
[c. 1305]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot and Convent of Blanchelande.
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
[This petition is badly damaged and stained.]The Abbot and Convent of Blanchelande request the restoration of property and tithes in the parish of St Martin Belleuze, originally granted to them by Duke Richard of Normandy in return for a chantry for the souls of him and his family. This appears to be in connection with an inquest held before the eyre of Guildford on a plea brought by the attorneys of Grandison.
Nature of endorsement
Guernsey, Norman Islands (Channel Islands).View the Abbot's charters at the next parliament, and bring the records of the justices.
Places mentioned
Blanchelande Abbey, [Normandy, France]
Guernsey, [Channel Islands]
St Martin Belleuze, [Guernsey, Channel Islands]
Normandy, [France].
People mentioned
Richard, Duke of Normandy
attorneys of Otto de Grandison
Otto de Gransoun (Grandison)
Henry de Gildford (Guildford), justice.
Note
Henry de Guildford and his colleagues held an eyre in the Channel Islands in 1304 (Crook, Records of the General Eyre, p.192), and it seems likely that the petition dates from shortly afterwards. It seems likely that the lands, as with others in the Channel Islands, were taken into the king's hands due to conflict with France.
