SC 8/129/6435
Date
[? 1326-? 1327]
Description
Petitioners
The Middle People of the Commons of Norwich.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The 'Middle People' of Norwich request that the king order that no tallages be imposed in the city without his permission. They state that the king previously appointed a commission into this matter, but the rich people of the town persuaded them that there was no problem, and that tallages would not be imposed without consent. However, since the king and justices left they have levied another 200 marks, and threaten to raise more.
Nature of endorsement
Norwich. Norfolk. Before the Council.Let them sue their account before the justices, and if the tallage is beyond the assent of the community let them have a writ from Chancery against those who have imposed the tallage that they answer before the king, and that this be done no more.
Places mentioned
Norwich, [Norfolk]
Norfolk.
People mentioned
Bailiffs of Norwich.
Note
As noted on the guard, in January 1308 Edward II re-affirmed the terms of a commission of Edward I into the imposition of tallages in Norwich. However, the petition refers to an enquiry into tallages imposed since the coronation (25 February 1308), and thus presumably refers to another commission. Hudson and Tingey, 'Records of the City of Norwich', I, p.61, while dating the petition only to the early-fourteenth century, show that Edward II was at Norwich in January 1326, and since this appears to have been his only visit, assuming that the King is indeed Edward II it thus seems likely that the petition was presented at some point between Edward's departure and his deposition.
