Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/129/6433
Date
[c. 1300-c. 1305]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot of Notley.
Addressees
King and Council.
Occupation
Abbot of Notley
Nature of request
The Abbot of Notley requests remedy, stating that he has been distrained by the king's bailiffs to appear in the court of Princes Risborough. Neither he nor any of his predecessors had ever been so distrained during the time of Earl Edmund or King Richard of Almaine.
Nature of endorsement
Order the Treasurer and Barons to call the bailiffs before them and do right.
Places mentioned
Notley, [Buckinghamshire]
Ryseberg (Princes Risborough), [Buckinghamshire].
People mentioned
Edmund [of Almaine], Earl of Cornwall
Richard of Almaine, [Earl of Cornwall, King of the Romans].
Note
Dated on the guard to c.1300, with reference to the death of Edmund, Earl of Cornwall (September 1300). The lands of the earldom were later granted to Queen Margaret, and it seems likely that the petition dates from between these two events. As also noted on the guard, it may be connected with a dispute between the abbot and the bailiffs over rights to a tithe of colts at Princes Risborough, settled in favour of the abbot in 1305, after the property had been granted to the queen (CCR 1302-7, pp.279-80; CIM 1219-1307, p.534 (no.1970)).
