SC 8/129/6431
Date
[1386-1388]
Description
Petitioners
John de Holand.
Name(s)
de Holand, John
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
John de Holand requests the restoration of letters patent granting to him the reversion of the manors, hundreds and other property of Audley and Loryng. The king has lately ordered him to return the letters, of which a copy is attached, and ordered the chancellor to cancel the enrolment in Chancery.[A copy of the original letters patent, dated 18 December 1384 and granting the reversions of these lands to Holand, is attached.]
Nature of endorsement
[on dorse of petition] Because the matter in this petition is notorious, it is agreed in parliament that new letters be issued under the great seal in the same form, date, etc., and the cancellation of the enrolment should be annulled; and let right be done to the petitioner on this matter.[at foot of attached letters] Memorandum that Michael de la Pole, chancellor, on 2 April [1386], brought these letters into Chancery, stating that the king had ordered that they be cancelled, as John de Holand had returned the letters to the Chancery to be annulled. And therefore the letters are cancelled and annulled.

Note
Assigned by Rot. Parl. III, p.177 to 7 Richard II (1383-4), but this is clearly incorrect. Since Michael de la Pole is described in the petition as 'then chancellor', and the petitioner simply as John de Holand, the petition presumably dates to some point between the dismissal of de la Pole on 23 October 1386 and the elevation of Holand to the Earldom of Huntingdon on 2 June 1388. This would strongly suggest that it dates to the parliament of February 1388. Holand, by then Earl of Huntingdon, was granted various lands, including most of those mentioned here, on 16 July 1388, possibly as a result of this petition.
