The commons of Northamptonshire state that, since the time when John le Moyne was sheriff, the custody of Northampton Castle has been in the hands of the sheriff of Northamptonshire, and the profits of the castle and the gaol have been used to contribute towards the fee farm of the county. When the castle has been granted to others, an allowance of £30 has been granted to the sheriff for his farm. However, the commons now request remedy, as the castle and its profits have been granted to Murrers, with no such allowance being made.

Note
As the petition states, Murrers was granted custody of Northampton castle on 7 October 1378, and the petition presumably dates from shortly afterwards. A note on the guard speculatively suggests 1381-2, but no evidence is cited, and since the loss of revenue would have affected every sheriff after that date, an earlier date is probably more likely.
