Nature of request
The petitioners state that at the March ay held at Lyliotcrosse, it was agreed that Musgrave and Marcere should be pledged to return to prison on the following Pentecost, under penalty of 10,000 marks, for which the petitioners were pledges for Musgrave. However, Thomas surrendered himself late, and the Earl of March, to whom the pledge was made, demands the 10,000 marks. He has threatened to distrain this from the people of the March, which will ruin the area, and they therefore request remedy from the king.

Places mentioned

Scotland.
People mentioned
Thomas de Musgrave
John Marcere
[George Dunbar], Earl of March.
Note
Musgrave and his force were captured by the Scots near Melrose on 27 August 1377. He was to return to prison on 6 June 1378, but only arrived on 11 June, and (presumably after a further ransom) his arrest was ordered on 7 June 1379. Given the preamble, that order may well have been in response to this petition, and given the dates concerned and the address, the petition was probably presented to the parliament of April 1379.
