Description
Petitioners
Executors of Ralph de Nevill of Raby.
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The executors of Ralph de Nevill state that, although Nevill had spent much on repairing Bamburgh Castle while he was custodian, they have nevertheless been ordered to make further repairs to the castle. They therefore request an enquiry into what dilapidations occurred during Nevill's time, so that they are not charged for damages which occurred before or after that period, and although they are ready to make reasonable repairs, they expect allowance for sums already spent by Nevill during his lifetime.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Raby, [County Durham]
Bamburgh, [Northumberland].
People mentioned
Ralph de Nevill (Neville) of Raby.
Note
Dated by Fraser to 1367-72. Ralph de Nevill's successor at Bamburgh, Richard de Pembrugg, was appointed on 15 August 1367, and on 20 October 1367 the damage reported by him was to be examined, and the executors were ordered to pay for the work (CPR 1367-70, pp.2, 4, 52; CCR 1364-8, pp.348-9). Further orders were issued on 21 May 1368 for workmen to undertake the repairs (CPR 1367-70, p.115), and the work was complete by June 1372 (CIM 1348-77, p.331). The precise position of the petition in this sequence is unclear, but since the order to the workmen on 21 May 1368 was issued on the same day as the dissolution of the first parliament to meet since Nevill's death, it seems likely that the petition was presented to that gathering.
