Name(s)

Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
Joan and John Maryot seek remedy against Edmund Wynter regarding the manor of East Beckham. They state that, following the death of William Maryot at sea, they were forced to offer the manor of ... for sale to pay his debts. Wynter made an offer, which was refused, but he then entered the manor by force, and sued writs against Joan and John, claiming the manor was his. Under his influence, two inquests found in his favour, and the petitioners were fined, and put in prison.
Nature of endorsement

Estbecham St Elyn (East Beckham), Norfolk.

Note
The petition states that the seizure of the manor by Wynter occurred on 20 December 1434, and given the ensuing events, this probably occurred a reasonable length of time before the petition was presented. A recognisance, probably made in connection with this case, was enrolled on 15 July 1436, suggesting that the petition dates from around that time. William Paston had become involved in this case by 1441.
