SC 8/128/6387
Date
[1319-1321]
Description
Petitioners
Sub-prior and convent of St Martin's, Dover.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
[The petition is incomplete, the lower section having been torn off.]The Sub-prior and Convent of St Martins, Dover, state that Henry II gave their church to Archbishop Theobald for the use of Benedictine monks. However, the Archbishop then declared that, when the priory was vacant, a monk of Holy Trinity Canterbury should become Prior, contrary to the will of their founder. This was over-turned under Edward I, but on the 13 December 1318 the prior died, and they have been without a Prior since then due to the actions of the prior of Holy Trinity. [The rest of the petition is missing].
Nature of endorsement
The two petitions from the monks of Dover are [answered] as follows.[Details of the legal process follow, but the text runs perpendicular to that on the face, and as such the right end of each line is missing, making the sense difficult to reconstruct.]
Places mentioned
Dover, [Kent]
Canterbury, [Kent].
People mentioned
Henry II, King of England
Theobald [of Bec], Archbishop of Canterbury
Innocent [II], Pope
Prior of Holy Trinity, Canterbury
Edward [I], King of England
John de Pecham, Archbishop of Canterbury
[Robert de Wetacre (Whiteacre)], Prior of Dover.
Note
Given that it was presented by the sub-prior of Dover, this petition presumably dates from between the death of Prior Robert de Wetacre on 13 December 1318 and the eventual appointment of the new Prior, John of Sholden, in 1321. This forms one of a number of related petitions on this issue in SC 8, some of which may be copies attached to letters relating to this case (e.g. SC 1/36/129).
