Description
Petitioners
William de Montagu, Earl of Salisbury.
Name(s)
de Montagu, Earl of Salisbury, William
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
[This petition is badly damaged, incomplete, and illegible in places.]William de Montagu, Earl of Salisbury states that his father was granted lands in Denbighshire, but that Roger de Mortimer recovered these from him. However, there was an error in the process and judgment, but despite this, and the fact that the judgment was executed in the twenty-eighth year of the King's reign, he has received no compensation. He has sued from parliament to parliament, and in the parliament of November 1372 his petition was endorsed that justice would be done when the heir was of age. His petition to the last parliament, held at Westminster, has not been answered, but the heir, Edmund de Mortimer, is now of age. He requests that the King summon the record before him and his council in the present parliament, examine the charters and ordain a remedy. If an error is found, he asks to be restored to his possession with the issues, or, if the judgment is confirmed, that he receive compensation.

Note
This petition, damaged and incomplete, appears to be one of numerous surviving versions of this same petition dating from the reigns of Edward III and Richard II. This appears to be a duplicate of SC 8/18/881, and bears the same references to the 'last parliament' being that of 23 November 47 Edward III (1373), thus presumably dating this petition to that of 28 April 1376. As with Sc 8/18/881, Montagu is clearly addressing Edward III, as he speaks of the grant 'which you made to my father'.
