Date
[? 1399]
Description
Petitioners
George Meryot (Meriet).
Name(s)
Meryot (Meriet), George
Addressees
King and Parliament.
Nature of request
George Meryot requests the restoration of the manor of Marston Magna, from which he has been ousted by Mathew Gurnay, and the return of his writs and muniments, stolen by Gurnay when he seized the manor. He states that he had recovered seisin in the Common Bench on 3 November 1395 from Maud, wife of John Meryot, and held it for a considerable time until he was ousted in the previous August during the King's campaign.
Nature of endorsement
Sue at the common law.
Places mentioned
Brodemerston (Marston Magna), Somerset.
People mentioned
Richard II, King of England
John de Meryot (Meriet), knight
[Maud de Meriet], wife of John de Meryot (Meriet)
Mathew Gurnay, knight.
Note
The recovery by George Meryot occurred in November 1395, and Meryot and Gurnay were clearly in dispute by 16 October 1398, when appointments to hear Gurnay's plea of novel disseisin were cancelled. However, while the reference to 'Richard the second', rather than 'the present King' strongly suggests that Richard was no longer King, the lack of reference to his soul might suggest he was still alive. The mention of the King's 'campaign' in August may well refer to Henry IV's usurpation itself, and thus might date the petition to the parliament of autumn 1399, a date consistent with all these events. It is also quite probable that Gurnay used the turmoil of summer 1399 to seize lands he had failed to secure through the law.
