Description

Prior and Convent of Mount Grace.
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The Prior and Convent of Mount Grace request confirmation of a grant made to them by Richard II of the alien priory of Ware, and all other possessions in England and Wales of the Abbey of Our Lady of Lyre in Normandy. This property was granted to them for a fine of £1000, but their tenure has now been challenged by Herberd, who claims that Richard II also granted the priory of Ware to him, and despite an earlier agreement between them.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Mount Grace, [North Riding of Yorkshire]
Ware, [Hertfordshire]
Wales
Lyre, Normandy, [France].
People mentioned
Richard [II], King of England
William Herberd, monk
William Gascon, serjeant-at-law.
Note
On 16 July 1401 Henry IV granted Mount Grace an annuity of £100 for the loss of the alien priory of Ware and its possessions, which had been taken from them. That grant was issued in response to the petition at SC 8/254/12682, but presumably the present petition was presented at some point between Henry IV's accession and the date of that grant.
