Addressees
Lords of Parliament.
Nature of request
The petitioners state that, according to a statute of 14 Richard II, all merchants making exchanges in Rome or elsewhere were bound in Chancery to buy merchandise of the staple to the same value within three months. This period was extended to nine months by the last parliament, and the petitioners request that it be further extended to a period of one year.
Nature of endorsement
The response to this petition appears on the roll of the parliament held on the Monday before Martinmas in the first year of King Henry VI.
Places mentioned
Rome, [Italy].
People mentioned
Richard II, King of England.
Note
As noted in the endorsement, this petition (presumably from the merchants, or the Commons on their behalf) was enrolled on the roll of the parliament of November 1422, along with the response (it was refused). The petition requests alterations to a statute designed to prevent letters of exchange from depleting the money supply.
