SC 8/128/6365
Date
[c. 1332]
Description
Petitioners
Roger Mauduyt (Mauduit).
Name(s)
Mauduyt (Mauduit), Roger
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Roger Mauduyt states that Edward II granted him custody of the lands of Robert de Umfraville, Earl of Angus, in the King's hands during the minority of the heir. Following an inquest, two extents were made, one of the value of the lands in peace-time and one in war-time. Robert's widow was granted a third of the lands according to the peace-time valuation, and Mauduyt was then charged to account for the remaining two-thirds for 19 and 20 Edward II (1325-7), also at peace-time rates, despite this being a time of war. He therefore asks that he be charged according to the war-time valuation, or a new valuation be made.
Nature of endorsement
Order the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer that, notwithstanding the valuations, they should make enquiry into the value of the lands for the time when they were in his keeping, and that he should be charged accordingly.
People mentioned
[Edward II], King of England
Robert de Umframvill (Umfraville), Earl of Angus
Eleanor [de Umfraville, Countess of Angus].
Note
An order to deliver dower lands to Countess Eleanor and Mauduyt, her new husband, according to a revised valuation was issued on 12 April 1332. This was done following a complaint by the Earl's heir, Gilbert, as to the extent of Eleanor's dower, but may well have been a consequence of the revised valuation requested by Mauduyt in this petition.
