Reference
SC 8/128/6362
Date
[c. 1385]
Description
Petitioners
William Mountagu (Montagu), Earl of Salisbury.
Name(s)
Mountagu (Montagu), Earl of Salisbury, William
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The Earl of Salisbury states that William Gylberd, former mayor of Calais, is seeking a commission under English law to overturn a judgment made and confirmed in favour of the Earl under the laws and customs of Calais regarding certain sums of money. He therefore asks the King to ensure that any such commission be granted to the people of Calais, and that it be carried out under the customs of Calais and no others.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Calais, [France]
Artois, [France].
People mentioned
William Gylberd (Gilbert)
mayor of Calais
[Adam Houghton], Bishop of St David's, Chancellor of England
[Edward III, King of England].
Note
A variety of commissions to investigate the record of this case were enrolled on the patent roll between 1380 and 1385, the latter ones also including references to examinations made following complaints by Gylberd. The original plea of error must have been made between Richard II's accession on 22 June 1377 and the dismissal of Adam Houghton on 29 October 1378, as the petition refers to the Bishop as 'Chancellor of the King' (not the former King). However, the appearance of references to Gylberd's complaints only in the later commissions suggests that the Earl's petition also dates from the latter part of this period, probably c.1385.
