de Brotherton; de Brotherton, Margaret; Thomas
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
[Part of this petition is now missing, and some details are taken from surviving duplicates.]Margaret, daughter and heir of Thomas de Brotherton, states that Edward I granted by his charter that he and his heirs would give her father and his heirs an inheritance of 10,000 marks' worth of land and rent in suitable places within England, and Edward II granted him the lands and lordships which belonged to Roger Bygod, formerly Earl of Norfolk and Marshal of England, in England, Ireland and Wales, to the value of 6000 marks. Edward III then assigned him various manors lands and tenements worth 1000 marks, in part satisfaction of the remaining 4000 marks. However, Edward III took this last gift back into his hand: Margaret therefore requests restitution of these manors, lands and tenements, or other lands to the same value.

Note
This petition is incomplete, but is one of a number of surviving duplicates; for details, see SC 8/19/933. Rot. Parl. vol. III, pp.127b-128a edits a related petition amongst those presented in parliament in 1381-2, although it can now be shown that not all of those petitions necessarily date from those years. This petition is probably earlier than SC 8/19/934, where the petitioner appears to be in secure possession of the lands mentioned as having been taken back into Edward III's hands. However, there is no evidence to show that either of these petitions (or the numerous duplicates of them) ever resulted in royal action, and they can therefore be dated only to the period between the accession of Richard II in 1377 and the creation of Margaret as duchess of Norfolk in 1397.
