SC 8/127/6341
Date
[1348-1377]
Description
Petitioners
Merchants.
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The merchants seek remedy, stating that when the King was at Sandwich with his fleet in his twenty-second year (1348), he ordered that the merchants were to unload all wool from their ships and bring them to join the fleet, and also that they were to pay him an extra two marks for each sack above the usual custom. The merchants were promised repayment, and have been told in parliament to pursue this with the Treasurer, but nothing has yet been paid.
Nature of endorsement
Spaigne.Coram Rege.Before the magnates.
Places mentioned
Sandwich, [Kent].
Note
Dated on the guard to? c.1376, but no evidence given. The petition clearly dates to some point between the events recounted in 1348 and the death of Edward III in 1377. The reference to an earlier order made in parliament may refer to the response to the petition at SC 8/126/6269, which authorised the payment of these sums.
