Date
[? 1317-? 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Reynald de Massingham, servant of Roger de Felton.
Name(s)
de Massingham, Reynald
Addressees
King and Council.
Occupation
servant of Roger de Felton
Nature of request
Reynald de Massingham states that, in the king's eleventh year, he sent a ship of Boulogne laden with goods to Flanders to get other goods for Felton, but the ship was attacked by Scluse and others off Margate, and goods worth £100 were stolen. He later found the attackers in London, and sued a writ against them before the mayor, but they fled, leaving behind their ship. This ship was worth 10 marks, which sum has been given to Reynald as part payment. However, he requests that the king send letters to his sheriffs and other officials ordering the arrest of Scluse and his companions, in order that he can recover the rest of his losses.
Nature of endorsement
Let him have letters close to whichever of the king's ministers he wishes, and whatever he wishes upon the contents of the petition.

Note
The petition explicitly refers to events of the king's eleventh year, and is dated on the guard to? c.1319. Given the people concerned, the petition could conceivably date to the reign of either Edward II or Edward III, but Edward II appears more likely. A date between 1317 and 1327 has therefore been suggested.
