Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/126/6297
Date
[c. 1290-c. 1320]
Description
Petitioners
Hugh Maunsel and Margery Maunsel, his wife.
Name(s)
Maunsel; Maunsel, Hugh; Margery
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Hugh and Margery Maunsel request the King's help, stating that Margery's brother, William de Husseborne, sued writs against Walter and others, seeking to recover his inheritance. However, they accused him of involvement in an attack on Aldenham church, although this actually occurred before William was five years old. They also state that the jurors were promised 40d each to kill William, so that he could not claim his inheritance.
Nature of endorsement
Sue a writ to being the record before the King. And there he should await grace.
Places mentioned
Hertfordshire
Aldenham, [Hertfordshire].
People mentioned
William de Husseborne, brother of Margery
Walter, parson of Aldenham
Alexander de Cheyny
William Bolom
Simon de Grenlesgate
Ralph de la Penne
sheriff of Hertfordshire.
Note
Dated speculatively to the period c.1290-c.1320. An Alexander de Cheney died in 1296 (although this is not necessarily the man mentioned here), while William Husseborne and Ralph de la Penne made a fine in 1323 (Husseborne, seemingly around 21 at the time of the petition, must have been of age by 1323). The handwriting is inconclusive, although it does contain one example of a 'beaver-tailed S', which would suggest a date around 1300 (or a slightly later document written by an elderly scribe). However, the reference to the soul of the King's father might also suggest a time near the beginning of a reign, thus possibly making a date c.1307 most likely. According to VCH Hertfordshire, extensive building work took place at Aldenham church c.1300, and this may possibly have been related to the attack mentioned here, but no parson of Aldenham named Walter has been discovered from this period.
