Nature of request
William de Mereu, merchant of Genoa and attorney of Bonaventure, Fornet and other merchants, requests remedy, stating that when the merchants arrived at Southampton carrying hides from Greece and Spain, for which they ought to be exempt from the cocket, Sampson and Sutton, keepers of the cocket, arrested their merchandise, namely 51 Greek hides, for the cocket which they have no right to have.
Nature of endorsement
Order the keepers of the cocket that if they do not justly owe for the cocket for the hides which they have brought, then they should issue a quittance and relax the distraint unless the King shall wish to hear the plaint more fully.

Note
Comissions of oyer et terminer were issued in connection with various complaints by Mereu (described there as Meret or Meriet) on 21 July 1322 (CPR 1321-4, pp.250-1, in response to petitions at SC 8/126/6288-90), and given the similarities in the handwriting of the petitions, and in the people mentioned, it is clear that this petition relates to the same series of events.
