Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/126/6276
Date
[1280-1281]
Description
Petitioners
John de Meriet (Merriott).
Name(s)
de Meriet (Merriott), John
Addressees
King.
Places mentioned
Merriott, Somerset
Lopen, Somerset
Wilton, [Wiltshire].
Nature of request
John de Meriet makes two requests. 1) He requests the return of fairs which he and his ancestors held at Lopen and Merriott, which have now been taken into the hands of the King. 2) He requests the restoration of various rights and franchises in Lopen and Merriott, held by him and his ancestors since the Conquest, but which have been taken into the King's hands since he has no proof of these rights.
Nature of endorsement
[on face] 1) Have a writ of replevin, and come to Wilton before the justices and receive justice. 2) Have a writ of replevin and come as above.
Note
A chancery warrant was issued, seemingly on behalf of Meriet's son, on 18 October 1303, authorising the examination of the processes behind the seizure of these fairs into the King's hands by the justices in eyre in 1280 (CCW 1244-1326, p.193). This is evidently the seizure referred to in the petition, part of Edward I's quo warranto enquiries into claims to liberties and privileges. The parliament of 1278 ordered that such claims should be held before the justices in eyre, and the eyre visited Somerset in 1280. It was in Wiltshire in 1281, sitting at Wilton for part of its visit, and this suggests that the order to attend the justices at Wilton refers to that time.
