Description
Petitioners
Merchants of the Realm.
Addressees
King and Parliament.
Nature of request
The greater part of the merchants of the realm, for themselves and their companions, request that payment be made to them for sums taken by the King in his twenty-second year, while his host was at Sandwich preparing to cross to Flanders. An extra charge of 2 marks upon each sack of wool, hides and wool-fells had been imposed, with letters issued to the merchants promising repayment, but this has not yet occurred.
Nature of endorsement
Sue to the Treasurer for payment.
Places mentioned
Sandwich, [Kent]
Flanders.
People mentioned
Walter de Chyryngton (Chirington), farmer of the customs.
Note
The petition presumably dates to between 28 August 1349, when the customs on wool were granted to Chyryngton and two others, and 1356, by when they had been taken back into the king's hands (CCR 1349-54, pp.99-100; CCR 1354-60, p.291).
