Reference
SC 8/126/6268
Date
[c. 1336]
Description
Petitioners
Hugh Madefrey (Matefry).
Name(s)
Madefrey (Matefry), Hugh
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
Hugh Madefray appears to be making a request in connection with his time as the keeper of the manors of Wingham and Wingham Barton during the vacancy following the death of Walter Reynolds, Archbishop of Canterbury. He recites details of the lands concerned, the day he took over and the day he delivered them to Simon Meopham. The actual request appears to relate to standing corn on the manors, but the foot of the petition is damaged, and the precise nature of the request is unclear.
Nature of endorsement
He shall have a writ to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer to the effect of this petition, and they should summon before them the said executors, and hear the plea and the reasons, and do right to the said Hugh. And grant respite ... towards the King.
Places mentioned
Wingham, [Kent]
Wingham Barton, [Kent].
People mentioned
Walter Reynald (Reynolds), Archbishop of Canterbury
Simon [Meopham], Archbishop of Canterbury.
Note
This petition clearly relates to the same issue as SC 8/58/2877, a dispute over corn on the manors at the time of the grant to Madefray. Arrangements for him to repay the outstanding arrears were sent to the Exchequer on 15 April 1336, and it seems that both petitions were presented around this time.
