Description
Petitioners
William Maynwaryng (Mainwaring).
Name(s)
Maynwaryng (Mainwaring), William
Addressees
King and Council in Parliament.
Nature of request
William Maynwaryng seeks remedy regarding his inheritance to the manor of Baddiley. He states that Shavynton granted the manor by fine to William de Preeres, and shows that the manor should descend to him, as the other potential heirs have no male issue. However, while he was absent for over twenty years in the wars in Gascony with the King's father and grandfather, John, son of John de Honford, claimed a moiety of the manor as the heir of the sister of Mainwaryng's mother. However, he claims that Honford is a bastard, and notwithstanding a false certificate from the Bishop of Lichfield claiming otherwise, he asks that he be restored to the entire manor, as he had been unable to challenge the original rulings due to his absence.

Note
A William, son of Robert de Praers, presumably one of the prospective heirs mentioned, died in 1398 (CFR 1391-9, p.271), while Mainwaring received livery in July 1398, and was dead by May 1399. However, the mention of Robert Stretton, Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield (d.1385), and of the petitioner being in Guyenne for twenty years with the King's grandfather and father (d.1377 and 1376 respectively), might suggest a rather earlier date, and the petition would seem to suggest that William son of Robert was still alive at the time. Thus the petition could conceivably date to any point between 1385 and 1398. A note on the guard dates it to? c.1394, and although no evidence is cited, this may well be correct. Unfortunately the numerous familial relationships given in the recited entail are not all entirely clear.
