Leonard, Abbot of Newenham seeks remedy against Philip de Courtenay, who he claims has attacked and imprisoned him, and against whom he can have no remedy at common law due to his great power in the county. He recounts that he was attacked in his abbey by Courtenay's men, and then taken to Honiton, where they demanded money from him. They then took him to Bickleigh, where he was imprisoned for 15 days. His friends sued writs before the Council, summoning Courtenay to account, but he failed to appear. Courtenay was then ordered to keep the peace, but he again came to the abbey with a force, threatening the abbot and imprisoning two monks.
