Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/126/6260
Date
[1381-1387]
Description
Petitioners
John Maundour, clerk.
Name(s)
Maundour, John
Addressees
King and Council.
Occupation
clerk
Nature of request
John Maundour requests the withdrawal of a commission issued to John, Lord Neville, that he maintain the proctors of the Cardinal of Ravenna in the archdeaconry of Durham. Maundour claims that he was rightfully appointed to the archdeaconry in the time of Bishop Thomas, and asks to be returned to his possession, particularly since justices appointed in the last parliament have said that the commission to Neville was against the law and should be repealed.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Durham archdeaconry
Durham, [County Durham]
Ravenna, [Italy].
People mentioned
Thomas [Hatfield], Bishop of Durham
John [Neville], Lord Neville
[Pileus de Prata], Cardinal of Ravenna (Cardinal of St Praxedis).
Note
Datable to the period between the appointment of Lord Neville to maintain the cardinal in the archdeaconry, 11 July 1381 (CPR 1381-5 p.73), and the cardinal's replacement in the archdeaconry by Maundour, 11 August 1387 (CPR 1385-9 pp.349, 431). The reference to justices appointed by the last parliament suggests that it represents a later stage in this episode, and probably post-dates another petition from this petitioner at SC 8/21/1021. Although described here as the 'Cardinal of Ravenna', the dates and events concerned indicate that this is the same Pileus, Cardinal of St Praxedis mentioned in the other references.
