Reference
SC 8/125/6246
Date
[1421]
Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of Melcombe Regis.
Addressees
Commons.
Nature of request
The burgesses of Melcombe Regis request the renewal of a grant of the King's father, made on 8 May in his eleventh year, allowing them to keep the fee farm of their town, rendering only 20s per year, and confirming the reduction of the amount payable for each tenth and fifteenth to 6s 8d. The original grant, made for ten years, has now expired.
Nature of endorsement
[on face] Let it be sent to the Lords.
Places mentioned
Melcombe Regis, Dorset.
People mentioned
Henry [IV], King of England.
Note
The original grant was made by Henry IV on 8 May 1410, and would therefore have expired on 8 May 1420. Two Parliaments began in the next calendar year, on 2 December 1420, and 2 May 1421. The petition bears the same style of numbering at the foot, and an identical filing hole, as the next petition in this file (SC 8/125/6245), which explicitly refers to the return of the King from the wars, and hence can be dated with relative certainty to the parliament of May 1421. SC 8/24/1157-9 also bear the same numbers and holes as this petition, and these petitions explicitly date from that parliament.
