Reference
SC 8/125/6242
Date
[1419-1436]
Description
Petitioners
Ralph Makerell and Margery Makerell, his wife.
Name(s)
Makerell; Makerell, Ralph; Margery
Addressees
Commons.
Nature of request
Ralph and Margery Makerell request intervention in a case brought by Margaret Rempston, who is claiming £2000 under a writ of waste. However, the detail of the petition is now difficult to reconstruct due to extensive damage to the document.
Nature of endorsement
[on face] Let it be sent to the Lords.[on dorse] The inquest is determined by the record of the justices.
Places mentioned
Nottinghamshire.
People mentioned
Margaret [de Rempston], widow of Thomas de Rempston
Thomas de Rempston, knight
Thomas Gresley, former sheriff of Nottinghamshire
William Nevill, undersheriff of Nottinghamshire.
Note
Dated on the guard to? 1428, with reference to Gresley's period as sheriff of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire in 1426-7. However, he also served as sheriff in 1418-19, but it is not known when Nevill served as his undersheriff. Makerell, himself sheriff on three occasions (he followed Gresley in 1419-20) appears to have died in 1435-6 (C 139/74/21), while Margaret Rempston (wife of Sir Thomas Rempston (d.1406)) died in 1454. Given that the petition refers to events in either 1418-19 or 1426-7, it presumably dates to some time between the earlier of these periods and Makerell's death. The damage to the petition makes further identification difficult, and the exact location of the wasted lands in question is now illegible.
