SC 8/125/6229
Date
[1385]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas, Prior of Michelham.
Name(s)
Thomas
Addressees
King and Council of Parliament.
Occupation
Prior of Michelham
Nature of request
The Prior of Michelham states that the King had granted him the keeping of the alien priory of Wilmington for the duration of the war. The Prior undertook this despite the great costs, which have been borne by his house. However, the King has now granted the farm of the priory to James de Berners, and the Prior had been ousted, to his great loss. He therefore requests that the patent to Berners be repealed, and the same patent be re-granted to him.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Michelham, [Sussex]
Wilmington, [Sussex].
People mentioned
Prior of Wilmington
James de Berners, knight.
Note
Berners was appointed as keeper on 6 October 1385 (CPR 1385-9, p.27), and the Prior of Michelham was granted leave to remove his goods on 19 December 1385 (CPR 1385-9, p.70). That grant was explicitly in response to a petition, although that petition (presumably presented to the parliament of October 1385) does not appear to be the present document. That petition was said to relate to the Prior being distrained for his farm by summons of the Exchequer, which is not mentioned in the present petition, but given the timescale involved (6 October to 19 December 1385), presumably the Prior made two petitions to the parliament of October 1385, the present one requesting the return of the farm, and, after that request was rejected, a later one regarding the Exchequer distraint for his farm.
