Reference
SC 8/125/6227
Date
[? c. 1388]
Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of Melcombe Regis.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The burgesses of Melcombe Regis request that the fee farm of the town be remitted for the next ten years, along with all contributions towards fifteenths and any arrears outstanding. They say that their town has been burnt and destroyed by the enemy twice in the last ten years, and the remaining people cannot pay. Also, they have been forced to make visiting merchants contribute towards these charges, and as a result merchants are no longer visiting the town.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Melcombe Regis, [Dorset].
Note
Dated on the guard to either 1388 or 1394, with reference to grants made in those years, but only the 1388 grant refers to the remission of the arrears, and it seems unlikely that the burgesses would request such a remission after it had been granted. However, the petition requests exemption for ten years, while the 1388 grant was made specifically for seven years; it is perfectly possible that the King only granted seven years despite being asked for ten, but it is also possible that this petition was presented before 1388 and was unsuccessful.
