Reference
SC 8/125/6225
Date
[? c. 1394]
Description
Petitioners
Merchants of the Hanse of Germany.
Addressees
King and Lords in Parliament.
Nature of request
The merchants of the Hanse of Germany trading in England complain that the customers of Southampton have charged them unwarranted and excessive new customs on their cloth, contrary to the terms of their privileges and charters, and despite orders to cease this and return the amounts taken, they have not done so. They therefore ask that certain lords be appointed to examine the situation, and resolve the matter.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Almaigne, [Germany]
Southampton, [Hampshire].
People mentioned
[Edward III], King of England.
Note
Dated on the guard to? c. 1394, with reference to an order on the close rolls to the officials in Southampton to cease collection of new customs (CCR 1392-6, pp.238-9). The petition from the Hanse mentioned in that order is clearly not the present petition, as the order relates to customs on herrings, pitch, wood and other items, not the cloth concerned here, but the terms are very similar, and it seems likely that they relate to the same issues.
