Reference
SC 8/125/6223
Date
[c. 1377]
Description
Petitioners
Alexander Martyn of Hatfield and Alice Martyn his wife.
Name(s)
Martyn; Martyn, Alexander; Alice
Addressees
King and Lords in Parliament.
Nature of request
The petitioners request assistance in their disputes with Morton, who they claim has committed various offences against them. They state that, although they have letters of protection from the late King Edward, Morton has ousted them from their lands, imprisoned Alexander for a week in Conisbrough Castle, and destroyed and wasted other lands, amongst other crimes. They are unable to get justice as no person dare oppose Robert, and royal letters sent to Robert under the privy seal have been ignored.
Nature of endorsement
Let this bill be sent to the King's Bench, and let the said Robert be brought ... and concerning the trespass let them sue at common law.
Places mentioned
Hatfield, [West Riding of Yorkshire]
Bawtry, [West Riding of Yorkshire]
Yorkshire
Conisbrough, [West Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
Robert de Morton of Bawtry
Edward [III], King of England
Sheriff of Yorkshire.
Note
Dated on the guard to c. 1377, and the handwriting and the reference to the late king Edward would certainly suggest a date in the early part of the reign of Richard II. Robert de Morton was a prominent royal official in Nottinghamshire at this time, which would explain the Martyns' problems in gaining justice.
