Reference
SC 8/125/6222
Date
[c. 1381]
Description
Petitioners
Robert Maunxsel (Maunsell).
Name(s)
Maunxsel (Maunsell), Robert
Addressees
Lords in Parliament.
Nature of request
Robert Maunxsel asks the lords to secure his release from prison, where he has remained at the instigation of Philepot. He claims that he was arrested by Philepot, and when the Earls of Warwick and Stafford attempted to secure his release, Philepot would only release him if he swore allegiance to him, and refused the protection of the King and other lords. Maunxsel refused, and after 24 days in prison was brought to the Guildhall and forced to enter a bond with Philepot, but was nevertheless returned to prison, and has remained there for over two years. Although orders for his release have been issued, the writs were never returned and process delayed.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
London.
People mentioned
John Philepot (Philpot, Phylpot), former Mayor of London
[Thomas Beauchamp], Earl of Warwick
[Hugh de Stafford], Earl of Stafford
John Eston, mercer of London
Simon Eylesham, mercer.
Note
Philepot was mayor of London in 1378-9, and given that the petitioner complains of being in prison for over two years, presumably the petition dates to c.1381.
