Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/125/6211
Date
[c. 1376-c. 1385]
Description
Petitioners
Margaret Marshal, Countess of Norfolk and John Hastings, Earl of Pembroke.
Name(s)
Marshal, Countess of Norfolk; Hastings, Earl of Pembroke, Margaret; John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Margaret and John request that the King grant them the office of Marshal of England, and that he appoint a deputy to perform whatever services he requires.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Note
Dated on the guard to?1381-5, to between the appointment as Marshal of Thomas de Holland, Earl of Kent (actually March 1380) and his replacement by Thomas Mowbray, Earl of Nottingham, and probably to?1381-2. Margaret is not known to have used the title of Countess of Norfolk until 1377, and as such the Earl named is Margaret's grandson, son of another John (d.1375), who was born in 1372. Margaret was granted joint wardship in January 1376, and he died in 1389. Duplicates of this petition (written by different scribes but identically worded) are SC 8/125/6209 and SC 8/129/6440, and one solely from Margaret is SC 8/125/6210. However, it seems highly unlikely that any of these petitions date to any time after June 1385, when the office of Marshal was granted to Mowbray, another of Margaret's grandchildren.
