Reference
SC 8/125/6208
Date
[c. 1377-c. 1397]
Description
Petitioners
William de Montagu, Earl of Salisbury.
Name(s)
de Montagu, Earl of Salisbury, William
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
William, Earl of Salisbury seeks remedy regarding attacks on his forest of Garthbriddok in his lordship of Mold, which he states he holds of the Crown, not of the principality of Wales or the lordship of Chester. He complains that the people of Flintshire continually enter his forest, grazing their cattle, cutting down his trees and threatening his foresters.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Mohunteseale (Mold) lordship, [Flintshire, Wales]
Wales
Chester, [Cheshire]
Garthbriddok (Garthbridoke) Forest, [Flintshire, Wales]
Flintshire, [Wales].
People mentioned
Justice of Chester.
Note
Assigned by Rees to the period 1338-44, but the handwriting is clearly much later in date. As such, the petition presumably dates from the time of the second Earl William, who came of age in 1349 and died in 1397. On the basis of the handwriting a date in the reign of Richard II appears most likely.
