Reference
SC 8/125/6207
Date
[c. 1377]
Description
Petitioners
Robert of Windsor, Prior of Merton.
Name(s)
Windsor, Robert
Addressees
King and Council.
Occupation
Prior of Merton
Nature of request
The Prior of Merton requests the restoration of a marsh in Essex, wrongfully taken into the King's hands. He states that the marsh was subject to a legal dispute between Wodeham and Sturmyn, but that when Sturmyn then enfeoffed Edward III with the manor of Thundersley, the bailiffs distrained the tenants of the marsh, claiming it as part of that manor. The Prior states that it is not part of the manor, as is clear from a fine of Henry III, whereby Prior Henry bought the rent of the marsh from FitzBernard.
Nature of endorsement
Let this bill be sent to the King's Chancery, and call there the said Prior and the King's sergeants, as well as the bailiffs and other ministers of the said manor, and anyone else they wish to call, and let them bring their evidence, and hear their reasons and let right be done.
Places mentioned
Merton, [Surrey]
Essex
Thundersley, [Essex].
People mentioned
Edward de Wodeham
Donald Sturmyn, knight
Edward [III], King of England
Henry [III], King of England
John, King of England
Henry [de Basinges], former Prior of Merton
Ralph FitzBernard.
Note
Clearly dates to some point after the death of Edward III, but probably not as late as 1398, when another episode in this matter appears on the close rolls (CCR 1396-9, pp.358-9). A date in or soon after 1377 appears most likely.
