Description
Petitioners
Moneyers and Workers at the Exchange of Canterbury.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
[Most of this petition is illegible.]The moneyers of Canterbury appear to be making a request regarding tallages in the city, and recite an earlier document on the matter.
Nature of endorsement
Send a writ of Chancery to the bailiffs of Canterbury that they should do nothing contrary to the tenor of the charter and release the distraint which they have made without delay. Also order the sheriff of Kent that he should bring before the Barons of the Exchequer the bailiffs and the others mentioned in this petition at the quindene of Easter to answer the keeper of the Exchanges concerning the unjust distraints made contrary to the tenor of the charter, and the said sheriff is to maintain the keepers, workers, moneyers and other ministers of the Exchange according to the tenor of the charter.
Places mentioned
Canterbury, [Kent]
Kent.
People mentioned
John Holte, bailiff of Canterbury
[...] Hurd, bailiff of Canterbury
Simon Bertelot
Philip Tery.
Note
Large sections of this petition are now illegible, and the sense is impossible to reconstruct. The identity of the petitioners has been taken from the 'Index of Ancient Petitions' (List and Index Society, vol. I); the petition may have been more legible when that was compiled. Simon Bertelot was party to a grant of land in Canterbury in 11 Edward II (C 143/131/4), and the handwriting of the petition suggests a date roughly contemporary with that grant. The grant recited in the petition appears to date from the reign of a King Edward, but the regnal year is illegible.
