Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/125/6201
Date
[c. 1320]
Description
Petitioners
Common merchants passing by water between London and Oxford.
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The merchants request remedy concerning the passage of the River Thames between London and Oxford, which has become obstructed by gorces and other blockages, and they are being forced to pay tolls to the owners of the weirs, and are often delayed. Justices have been appointed, but nothing has been done.
Nature of endorsement
Let sufficient men be appointed to survey the gorces between London and Oxford, and take away the blockages and nuisances, so that boats may pass as they should and have anciently done.Coram magno consilio.
Places mentioned
London
Oxford, [Oxfordshire]
River Thames.
Note
Dated on the guard to? 1316, with reference to Oxford Petitions, p.138. However, that volume only suggests a date of temp. Ed II. Similar petitions were presented in 1302, 1305 and c.1320, and the handwriting of the present piece suggests a date closer to the latter of these, or probably slightly later. The reference to justices already appointed might indicate that it is subsequent to that petition.
