Reference
SC 8/124/6194
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Executors of John de Merkingfeld (Markingfield), former executor of William de Hamelton.
Name(s)
de Merkingfeld (Markingfield), John
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The executors state that the King has demanded of them various debts owed to him and his father by Merkingfeld and Hamelton. However they also state that the King and his father owed various debts to Merkingfeld and Hamelton, and therefore ask for a writ to the Treasurer to allow those debts against those owed to the King, and that an assignment be made in the North, at York or wherever the King pleases, to cover any sums outstanding.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered to the Treasurer and Barons that they view those who have the debt, and make a search as to what they owe to the King, and what the King owes to them, and certify this to the King.Coram Domino Rege.
Places mentioned
York.
People mentioned
William de Hamelton.
Note
Dated on the guard to c.1327, with reference to SC 8/165/8241, another petition from an executor of Hamelton and an executor of Merkingfeld requesting such an exemption. The allowance requested in that petition was ordered on 22 February 1327, and it seems likely that the present petition dates from the same or a similar time (or possibly slightly earlier, given that this petition does not contain the precise figures given in the other petition). However, the executors were still appointing attorneys to prosecute their cases in July 1329. John de Merkingfeld, chancellor of the Exchequer 1310-12, was dead by 1323.
