Reference
SC 8/124/6192
Date
[1332-1333]
Description
Petitioners
Prior and Convent of Markby.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The Prior and Convent of Markby state that they have received the king's letters regarding his request for an aid to pay for the marriage of his sister Eleanor. Although usually exempt, and despite the poverty of the house, the Prior and Convent offer 40 shillings as a mark of their high regard for the king.
Nature of endorsement
To his liege lord Sir Edward, King of England. For the Prior and Convent of Markby.
Places mentioned
Markby, [Lincolnshire].
People mentioned
Eleanor [of Woodstock], sister of the king.
Note
Letters appointing clerks to solicit contributions to this aid were issued on 26 June 1332 (CCR 1330-3, p.587). Evidently this is not a petition but a letter sent in response to the king's request, and appears to be a stray from C 270/10, one of the files of such letters relating to this tax (C 270/7-12). The Prior and Convent of Markby had already written to Edward stating that they were unable to pay due to their great poverty and high expenditure (C 270/10 no.6). The dated documents in those files were produced during 1332 and 1333.
